When To Fold
By JAR
The importance of having a good understanding about when to fold or not, can be a decisive factor in knowing if someone is a good or bad player. For this reason it's important to study every game, because the decisions you make in the pre-flop can be critical for your future opportunities. Just try to play in premium hand pre-flops, and try to play suited connectors/small pairs in case you have minor hands. It is better to just fold garbage hands.
It's important to learn to recognize when to fold; this can be used as part of an intelligent strategy. Why? Because folding at the right time will help you not to lose too much in a bad hand.
Small Mistakes vs. Big Mistakes
In Limit Hold'em, the inexperienced player makes small mistakes, rather than one big one, most of the time. For example, they call when they shouldn't, or continue calling when they are clearly beat. These actions are considered small mistakes in Hold'em that make you lose money over time and not only on just one hand most times.
It's important for players to scrutinize their own conditions before taking a bad decision. Check if you have pot odds, if the hand that you want to play is good or weak, and of course be prepared to accept when you're beat and admit defeat.
Obviously, players should be careful not to make big mistakes too. As some players lose money making small mistakes, there are big mistakes that will ruin your opportunities of success. One of them is folding when you shouldn't, and I&m not talking about folding to early; I'm talking about folding when you have the best hand late in the pot.
So, When to Fold?
First you need to know that there are 2 major decisions in Limit Hold'em. The pre-flop is the first one; here you need to choose if you play your hand or not. The second big decision is made on the turn. Some people worry to much during the flop, but this is actually not that important because this is a decision that you can make based on pot odds at the time.
