Folding in Poker

By JAR

poker, shuffling cards

Folding in poker is an interesting term. To explain it in simple terms I will tell you that when you fold in poker it means you give up and are automatically out. In other words, it's when you lay down your cards and stop playing the hand.

Folding in poker is sometimes an important move during the game, and may be used like an intelligent tactic. Sometimes it can help you avoid betting too much and then lose.

If you are an inexperienced player, you need to think well if you make the preflop or not, because it is a crucial decision for your game. In the case of experienced players, they know when to fold during the preflop.

For example, lets say you are in the hypothetical situation where you are playing poker with other people, the game has just started, the cards are dealt and you pick up a 10/Q. Then the players wager in the pot and the last player to act raises the wager. At this moment, you should evaluate the situation; consider that if it's going to be too expensive, it may be that you are not prepared to match a raise further down in the hand. Folding now may be a possible way not to lose.

Sometimes you are playing with few opponents, or the game is down to the last few players. In these cases it's easier to make a decision and keep playing, even with poor hands. If there are just 3 people in the table, a 10/Q becomes a better hand.

Be open minded to different situations, though; there are some circumstances in which you should always play. If you are on the big blind, for example, why not play it anyway?

Be conscientious about a preflop fold because this can be the difference between winning and losing. Some expert players say: "why risk money with a poor hand when you can use it with a great hand?"

The second major decision during the game is when it's time for the turn. If you can take it for granted, call the turn. You should call the river if you can because it would be a disaster to fold a winning hand on the river.

If you're calling the turn and the river it means that you are investing in two big bets; that's the same as four little bets. But if you fold at the turn you can lose slightly less than half the money you would have lost had you called to a showdown.

If you are in the river, this is not a good time to fold your hand. Obviously, there are exceptions to this: when you miss a draw, or if there is so much betting and raising that you know you are beat. Well, in these exceptions, to fold is an acceptable option.
