Do not marry your hand!

HHA

This is a very common expression around poker tables, and more popular in broadcast poker games. Sometimes a player will get in this spot where they get a really good hand in the flop or maybe the lady luck grants him a monster hand, and then he’ll hear bells going off in his head. But what could he do in a situation like this? Should he move all of his chips into the pot? Or should he slow play his hand?

First of all you have to take a look at the odds of getting your new “bride” to a possible beat down. Even if you check all the outs and have the strongest possible hand after the flop, you have to question yourself, maybe look for unlikely odds. Is there a possible flush in the flop… or a straight?

For example, if you get dealt a three of a kind with the highest card in the flop, you probably are most than willing to get married to your hand. But if in this flop there are 2 cards of the same suit your odds to win decrease by a lot, since you need certain cards to improve your hand, and the outs are so low that even if you get them another player seeking the flush may have up to 12 outs to achieve it. The scenario could become worse if your opponent had possibilities to get a straight. In this kind of situation make sure that the other players have to pay if they want to see the next card. You can allow them to get a free card, and then make them pay a lot for the next card after the turn if the color or straight didn't show up.

Sometimes it’s better to take what you can and avoid unnecessary risks. Remember to stick to your strategy and not to let you emotions get in the way, even if you get a monster hand in the flop. You could get into the zone where you would marry your hand and in the next card you would be dealing with the regrets of your previous decision. Learn to become unattached to your cards, even if they are really good ones.

Bottom line: if you have a monster hand in the flop, make your opponents pay to see the next card and then, if you can't make sure you will get the pot, just let your hand go.
