It may be strange for the new craps player, but in addition to the rules of the actual game play, there is a whole set of unwritten rules. Experienced players expect newcomers to be familiar with this special etiquette and consider these rules just as important to observe as the actual rules.
Some of these unwritten rules are connected to casino security and fair play, others regulate tipping. There are certain actions traditionally considered to bring on bad luck and therefore must be avoided. These unwritten rules regulate the height and manner of the throw of the dice: they should be thrown no higher than the eye level of the dealers and should hit the opposite wall of the table. If by any chance a dice hits a player and rolls back to the table, the number counts if the person did not interfere with the motion of the dice. In order to eliminate the possibility of a player switching the dice players are not allowed to handle the dice with more than one hand or take it past the edge of the table. For the same reason dealers are not allowed to touch any of the players or hand out chips directly to players' hands. If the shooter is ready to roll other players should remove their hands from the table so as not to interfere with the dice.
The dealers or the stickman often warn players about this with phrases like "hands high, let 'em fly". If a player wants to offer a tip to the dealer, he/she must place some chips down on the table and call out "For the dealers" or "For excellent service". Some players place a separate bet for the dealer besides their own. If the bet wins the dealer should collect it and not let it ride like other players.
It is considered bad luck if someone says the word seven after the come-out roll, so players use different nicknames for the number like "Big Red". It is also considered to bring bad luck if a player changes the dice in the middle of a roll or if the shooter leaves the table after a successful come-out roll. While some of these rules may seem simple superstitions most online casinos expect their players to observe them as a sign of respect and professionalism.
