The Chips You Don't Win

By HHA

If you don't lose you chips then you are not losing them. Seems like an obvious observation, but in poker everything is about subtlety, so every chip you don't win also counts. Sometimes, the more difficult mistakes to take notice come in disguise, so to speak. Maybe, when you win a pot, you think that no matter how you played every chip, it was good and got you closer to the money. But sometimes you have to analyze your hands and plays, even the ones you win. You can't just focus on the hands that you lose or the ones that cripple you stack of chips; sometimes your winner hands have terrible mistakes you should recount, because the worst plays usually came after previous poor decisions, even in the winning hands.

ace, queen and poker chips

You have to take advantage of the strong hands you receive no matter if they are just few. Remember you have to win chips and increase the pot in the early stages of pro-flop or post-flop, but don't over play your hand or everyone at the table will fold before you can get enough chips off them. Sometimes, even if you have a strong pocket hand at the beginning, you have to make your call or raise smoothly (making a mini raise could work too). For example, you don't want to slow down if you get pocket aces but if someone makes a raise before your turn, it is better to just call instead of making a raise, so you can get more chips off you opponents later.

In case you face a situation where you have a an excellent flop and your odds are very good then you should also try to smooth your movements instead of throwing and all-in. You can wait for your opponent to make a raise before you throw all you chips their way, or you can get more chips off the leader or some opponent that has an advantage over you in chips.

Take a look at your hands and how you play them, even the winning ones.
