Omaha is a table game similar to poker. It is played in different places around the world and has different names and variances. In general, the Omaha game is played with four cards and each player must make the best hand using exactly two of them plus three of five community cards.
The principal difference between Hold'em poker and Omaha is that if you are playing and showing strength, especially when betting from an early position, it's possible for you to advertise your hand value to the other players at your table, and if this happen they will be prepared to act to your move according.
In betting, it's important to show some strength, but you must be careful. Sometimes it also indicates vulnerability. In Omaha is very important to have well defined concept of flop/post-flop. This will help you to you win the pot during the game.
While in Hold'em betting on the preflop is important to get people with marginal hands out of the pot, in Omaha betting on the preflop is not a good practice. This because in Omaha, almost always, the maximum bet preflop exposes the person with aces and kings as they try to eliminate other people. If you see this, you can use it in your favor, plan your strategy with your hand and act accordingly.
In Omaha just like in Hold'em it is necessary to mind your position at the table. If you are in first position and have a strong hand, it’s advisable to bet in order to protect your hand. The problem with this is that it gives information away to the other players. But if you are in a late position, betting wouldn't be a problem because people will not necessarily discover your strategy.
There are some powerful tools that you can use when playing Omaha, like slow playing and check-raises. But keep in mind that playing slowly is very risky with a straight or flush. On the other hand, check-raising as a tactic depends a lot on the players at the table, and will only be useful if you are in an early position or if you believe the people behind you will bet and then call a re-raise.
