This is not only polite etiquette, but also an important aspect of the poker game. You already know that every bit of information you can get from your opponents is vital. When you or any player acts before his or her turn, not only is it bad manners, but in your case you will reveal information that you don't want to or that could modify the moves from other players, and it's obvious that not everybody is going to be happy about that. Remember there is an acting order and you should pay attention to it. When you act before your turn the others will already know what you will do before hand, and that in poker is just a terrible mistake.
The most common situation in which players act before it is their turn is when they fold. For example, a player checks, the next player makes a raise and the first player folds before the turn of actions returns to him. When you act before your turn and some players are still in the game, you actions will modify their behavior; if you fold before hand, maybe an indecisive player that was worried you would go after he made his move has nothing to worry about now. In other cases, if you make a raise or call before your turn, some players will fold prematurely, even if their intentions were to call first.
Sometimes this error can make you reveal information you don't want to; if you check and then some player raises, and you fold out of turn, you are telling everyone at the table that you check when you don't have anything in your hand. That can leave you out of the possibility of getting to see flops when your opponent is unsure of your game and strategy. This also applies if you begin counting your chips or the chips of your opponents before your turn.
So, as final word, this bad behavior will not only make your opponents angry, it also damages your game and will make you lose money.
